The “Great Resignation” is a term coined by Professor Anthony Klotz, an organizational psychologist at Texas A&M University, to describe the ongoing labor trend of record-breaking monthly resignation rates in the US economy. 

Beginning in early 2021, the BLS has reported an all-time high “quit rate” for five different months of the year—March, April, August, September, and November—with near-records for the months in between. To look at it another way, there have been over 4 million resignations every month since July.

According to the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), the compensation narrative is a compelling one for employers, many of whom are responding by raising base pay and improving benefits in 2022.

An All Voices survey of 400 HR professionals found that 48% of HR leaders have seen 30% of their staff leave in the past year. In addition, 65% of leaders have seen increased employee requests – from salary increases and stipends to bonuses and more robust benefit offerings. Clearly, HR teams are feeling the added pressure to keep their organization afloat while facing the challenges of a post-pandemic workforce.

With more responsibility often comes more risk of burnout. 53% of HR leaders stated they feel burned out in their role and 48% are currently looking for a new job. In addition, 62.6% of respondents have been with their organization for more than two years. Organizations should pay attention to these numbers as the loss of a veteran HR employee may be costly and difficult to navigate.
